Babayaga
Babayaga came together early in 2004,
forming itself from disparate threads of musical influence and experience.
Musically, the band carry echoes of the The Velvet Underground,
Dylan and Jefferson Airplane, rural folk-blues, with hints of the
English pastoralism of The Kinks. Their songs are songs from the
dimly lit margins Ð of society, of the psyche, of existence. Raw
and melodic... fragile and powerful... songs of rage and pity, despair
and redemption.
Sunday night, The Others Dylan
Bates
Dubbed 'the Paganini of Penge', Dylan Bates is a
unique voice in British jazz, both as a composer and violinist.
He is a first-call member of Billy JenkinsÕ Blues Collective, The
Fleapit Orchestra, Sextant and a number of other leading UK acts.
This is a rare opportunity to hear some of his music, including
such inspired compositions as ÔCosmetics In Space On A CosmonautÕs
FaceÕ and the ever popular ÔWide-Eyed WitchÕ, alongside more recent
works of a distinctly Belgian flavour. Bates (violin, voice &
cornet) will be joined by several members of the M-ire Collective,
which is dedicated to the promotion of underground musicians, bog-people,
and bass clarinetists.

Lane Boogie Boys
The BLBB were formed in the summer of 1998, after an impromptu session
between Big John Carter and Charlie Wilson. Soon after they brought
in Micky Carrol on electric guitar, and Eddie Edwards on double
bass, to complete the ensemble. This incarnation of the group lasted
for two and a half years before disbanding.
In 2003 Charlie and John decided to reform the group with the current
line-up (Gerry Collins and Mark Feld). In 2004 the BLBB were invited
on a mini-tour of the UK with Bill HaleyÕs original Comets. Since
then the group has been performing regularly in and around London.

present the basement rock'n'roll all-dayer!
Reverend Savage and his Holy Rollers
The members of the group have played in many Swedish outfits
but finally all four of these like-minded worshippers have
joined together to let the gospel of the Lord be heard. They are
not afraid to spread the word amongst the heathens of the world.
They will soon be showing up in your town and hold mass and turn
the sinners to saints. Or, as the band themselves like to put it:
Have Cross, WillTravel.

Drones Club
Music webzine freq.org.uk has presented local and international
artists at the Drones Club in the N16 area over the last year. Musical
styles on offer are eclectic and include experimental, abstract
and even danceable acts, from hard rocking fun to the downright
peculiar. There will be a full psychedelic lightshow by Lighting
Rod of Bubble Vision (who will be lighting The Others all weekend).
Stella Maris Drone Orchestra
An evolving collective, purveyors of ambientkrautdoomragas to the
discriminating psychonaut since 2003. Their music inhabits the furthest
reaches of the harmonic spectrum: from hypnotic tone oceans to fjords
of shambolic dissonance.>
SWARM
Having recently prompted a healthy amount of raised eyebrows in
Sierra Madre, SWARM now bribe you with bubblegum whilst creating
a feeding frenzy of sound and vision that guarantees every plate
in the house will be licked clean. UK debut.
Owls
Owls spawned from a mating between a tropical bird and the screeching
rusted brakes of a bus. Regular players to the imps of doom and the
court of the gypsy king, their louche cabaret act honed in darkened
basements and velvet-curtained bars.>
NowCatchy, contemporary, inventive, exotic, melodious and harmonious
21st century pop music. Now play a range of styles from experimental
improvised sounds to rhythmic, dancey, driving pop music that often
transforms into extended percussive jams.

Mike Gibson & The City Farmers
Mike Gibson and The City Farmers return to old St MaryÕs Church
for the first time since their debut over 1 1/2 years ago to headline
an Acousticism special event for the N16 Fringe festival. Ably assisted
by Acousticism favourites, Louis Jones and Friends (ex-Warm Jets),
upcoming local alt-country femme fatale Morning Bride and Spekki ChrisÕs
Martin-a-like percussive acoustic playing (thatÕs Jon Martyn, not
Chris!) the event promises to be one of the highlights of this yearÕs
Fringe.
This will be an event with a unique atmosphere. The City Farmers have
played only a few live concerts in the last twelve months but have
been well received wherever they go. Featuring local luminaries such
as Martin Fieber of The Customtones, here showing a more down-home
side to his slide playing, and GuitaristsÕ own Mathew Wig on acoustic
and electric guitars along with Godfathers founder member Mike, everyoneÕs
favourite bassist strollinÕ Al Kenning and hot young drummer Neil
Findlay, they have a wealth of experience on which to draw.
Saturday night, 7.30pm, St Mary's old church

in the ShillelaghÕs beer garden soaking up some mellow jazz courtesy
of the Jazz Duo?

Kiosk
Welcome kids to the fucked up uber groove of Kiosk. Recently back
from the Exit Festival in Serbia where they proudly supported The
Rakes and shortly after into the XFM studio for a live session on
John KennedyÕs show. Kiosk are on the up and up and rightly so, all
scratchy and urgent and uplifting and full of nailed-on energy and
sophistication. Feisty, and her voice could melt you, and those wired
edgy guitars, like that Saint Silas buzz of last year (where are they
now?). When did you last stumble upon a really unique band, a heart
breaking caressing beautiful band and IÕm finally lost for words.>
Saturday night, The Others
Last Amendment present
'Like The Wind Seen From The Window'
N16 MagazineÕs Ôdisgruntled anarchistÕ, Penny Rimbaud, presents
an evening of poetry and music with fellow ex-Crass stalwart Eve
Libertine. Working alongside some of LondonÕs leading jazz players,
firstly as Crass Agenda, but now as Last Amendment, Penny has managed
to establish the links between jazz and poetry so celebrated by
AmericaÕs West Coast beats and FranceÕs Left Bank bohemians. Coupled
with the political anger for which Crass were so renowned, PennyÕs
poetry offers comfort through consolation, consolation through chaos:
make it if you can take it. (Presented in conjunction with Disco
Volante.)
Sunday night, Bodrum

The Third
Power, melody, hallucinogenics, regressive mayhem, the best in the
business. Bring extra dosh to buy new CD 'Trust in the Lord'.
Saturday night, The Others
Luxury Condo
She was bad.
She was so bad it felt good.
Overwhelmed by a soundtrack of filthy Noir-Blues, bathing in the comfort
only twisted Country can bring.
Her ruby red lips pout to form the name at the source of this strange
sensation.
Sunday night, The Others

Friday afternoon, St Mary's Old Church
Mediaeval Baebes
The N16 Fringe is delighted to welcome one of the worldÕs top acts
to open the Festival.
The Mediaeval Baebes have established a legendary reputation for
themselves by reviving ancient text and song and turning historical
fantasy into reality for the pleasure of a modern audience. Their
first album, ÔSalva NosÕ, released in 1997 was certified Silver
within weeks of release and was Virgin ClassicsÕ fastest selling
debut album. The bandÕs 1998 follow-up, ÔWorldes BlysseÕ, blazed
into the Classical Charts at No.1 to widespread, critical acclaim.
Their new album ÔMirabilisÕ, is already considered to be their finest
work to date. Regarded as the most beautiful band in the world,
the Baebes comprise eight young women Ð vocalists, composers and
instrumentalists - from all corners of the globe, who delight in
their reputation for wantonness whilst singing songs from an age
of innocence.
Friday night (doors open 7.30pm, performance starts 8pm) at St MaryÕs
Church, Church Street. Entry £10 to include glass of wine. Party
afterwards at Abney Public Hall for ticket holders only to launch
new album 'Mirabilis' and to meet the Baebes.
Monkey Island
'Rocking like The Stooges mid-pelt through a rendition of Ginsberg's
'Howl', the music comes fast, heavy, feral; full of potent dysfunction.
Acidic punk and molten blues jack up the psycho-ward thrills with
mouth-harp frenzy. More disquieting still are the quieter, more
elliptic tracks, itch-inducing psychological sketches, like insects
crawling across sensitive skin. Monkey Island are the great undiscovered
garage-riot band of London town, don't wait for a Nuggets-style
excavation to dig their avant savage genius.Õ Stevie Chick, Kerrang

balladeering quartet with splashes of hazy sunshine and angel-voiced

The Mysterious Benefactors
A six-piece rock and roll band with a country/folk tinge. Combining
strong melodies with an often harsh, abrasive sound, they reside
somewhere between here and there, although IÕm not quite sure where.
With a line up that boasts an antipodean, a continental European
and a Goose, their soaring violin and swelling organ is sure to
please.
Saturday night, The Others
Nelson Dilation
For years Nelson Dilation has enjoyed success in Britain and abroad
as a DJ and the organizer of club nights such as 'Anokha', 'Salon
Oriental' and 'Tandoori Space'. The native-born Englishman is a
cult star of LondonÕs British-Asian and British-Arab music scene.
'I'm a British citizen, but I have a Russian grandfather and a Greek
grandfather. ItÕs a coincidence that my skin is whiteÕ, says the
Rasta man. Dilation mixes dance music with traditional music from
Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, skillfully adapting his
mixes to each club and occasion.

Born in the USA, Luddy sang with the Drifters as a young man and since

Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Rufus Thomas and other soul legends. His
distinctive, powerful yet silky vocals have brought him concerts and
gigs across Europe and beyond. Luddy normally gigs with his band Back
II Basics, but for his appearance at the Fringe he is presenting an
acoustic set with his regular guitarist Bruce Knapp, described as
ÔBritainÕs answer to Steve CropperÕ (the legendary Stax guitarist

Slack Sabbath
disastronaut presents slack sabbath club: a long running left field
music club, music publishers, record label and promoter... putting
on various acts from aphex twin to z [the singer/songwriter]; no
discernible music policy except whatÕs good Ð grime, industrial,

For the N16 Fringe Festival we are co-curating the night with local
magazine Vomit in the Mainstream (independently published by Karina

Beaver County Peter Hope-Evans from
the legendary 1970s psychedelic rockers Medicine Head plays jewÕs
harp, mouth organ and other bits of metal in this 2-piece band.
Peter is joined by Jeff Disastronaut, local writer and musician,
and the result is a journey through a fictional Pennsylvania
county that most resembles the real place where Jeffrey spent the
summers of his childhood and later University. Jeffrey contributes
to Vomit in the Mainstream and will be reading ÔWhat I Did
when I was supposed to be in Church,Ó from the Fear issue. Over
18s only please.
John E. Cash Money
Although the great man is dead, the music and memory of Johnny Cash

make humorously slanted takes on the great manÕs music and are great
live performers.
