far,
far funnier than I can explain here ( XS Mularkey),
The star of the night was the hilarious (and political)
Hils Barker ( The Edinburgh Guide); and Steve

Richard and Judy Show, Huge imagination
leaps off at surreal and very funny tangents ( City
Life Magazine).

Put on your comfy shoes, don a comfy sweater, settle into
a comfy chair and enjoy the experience that is Comfy Moss.
The tempo is slightly above heartbeat and all the dials are
set to medium. So leave your dancing trousers at home, pour
that Red Bull down the sink and get the cocoa on. Keep it
comfy!
DATABASS
Described by Time Out as "analogue
hip-hop art groovers". DATABASS formed to provide a commentary
to their parties, club nights and festival, hope festival
of sound.
A six piece collective who have pooled their influences to
create a highly charged mix of polemic, junk dub beats played
with a disco punk fervour.

Dharma Rain were born in the early
part of 2001 and in a short time have taken London and it's

DOGHEADS
Butch and Spike (those intrepid electronic adventurers) return
to the fringe with their unique brand of canine-friendly dogtronica.
Straight off the back of their recent 'dogheads party' at
Ryans bar and two show stopping performances at the St Pancras
Station building and Mutiny at the bargehouse, dogheads are
once again coming home to their original kennels after picking
up a few new tricks at the pound.
THE

THE
DUKE SPIRIT
The Duke Spirit are Leila Moss (vocals, harmonica), Luke Ford
(guitar, vocals), Toby Butler (bass, drums) and Dan Higgins
(guitar, keyboards), a London quartet whose brilliant brand
of dusty blues / art rock has been taking shape since their
inception last year. The band drink from a tainted wellspring
of atmospheric rock'n roll, employing a formidable arsenal
which includes echo, distortion, slide and blues harp to build
a reverberative wall of sound like the noise that vibrates
through Phil Spectors worst prison nightmares. The band
associate with Simon Raymonde (ex-Cocteau Twin and Bella Union
boss) and their sound has attracted comparisons with Clinic,
JAMC and the legendary Gun Club - high praise, low lives...

FRANK'S
BACK
'I have been asked what has made
Frank's Happy Hours such a great success. And the answer must
be the attention to detail - it is a complete magical package
of a night out. You just can't stop yourself having a ball.
From the moment you arrive and spot the stretched limo parked
outside, classic Sinatra movies sourced by The Film Shop,
a special range of Pizzas from Il Bacio, wonderful DRY martinis
and not forgetting the music of the man himself with his famous
Ratpack - played on a new sound system which is unequalled
anywhere around here. Above all else the wonderfully diverse
audience that truly enjoy such a unique evening.' Stoke

FRED
BJORKVALL
Fresh from acoustic nights in and around London, Swedish singer
songwriter Fred Bjorkvall presents his latest songs about
modern life and love in the capital. Catch him while you can,
acoustic as it's meant to be.
FREIXAS
Born near Barcelona 24 years
ago he studied modern music and cultivated a passion for songwriting
from his early days. Mainly guitar player n singer but also
wrestled with bass n drums with a few bands in his teens before
moving to london at the age of 19. A singer/songwriter mixing
classic values with experimental views.
GARLIC
Garlic were formed in London in
November 1998. Their second album Jam Sabbatical is
due for release on Bellaunion Records in Sept 2003. Its
the follow up to debut album The Murky World of Seats which
was released to great acclaim in 2001. With Peel Session,
support to New Order and live performances at CMJ and SWSX
under their belts, things are looking rosy for the UK outfit.
GIN
PALACE
'The most exciting band in London right now!' Artrocker
'The Gin Palace have an awesome strength in their sound, think
The Kills with a touch of P.J. Harvey. Guitar, drums, and
a female vocalist with some fine red puckered lips, this three-piece
gave us a sweaty Cramps-style set to much applause and smiles.
A worthy rockin' group with a sound stripped down to guttural
power and poise. It would be criminal to miss their gigs.'
Your Generation
'Newly formed from the ashes of criminally overlooked London
rockers PENTHOUSE, THE GIN PALACE trio strip it down to rock'n'roll
essentials... guitar, drums and vocals. It's Heavy RockIn'
Garage-a-Billy, blues rhythms with chromosones missing. CRAMPS?
LINK WRAY? STOOGES? ' Hunching, convulsing Twang-Power!' Artrocker
GLOW
This song-writing duo sucessfully combine heartfelt lyrics
with beautiful harmonies to create their own folk-tinged,
acoustic rock sound.

HANK
WANGFORD AND THE LOST COWBOYS
Rock 'n' roll doctor, author and travel journalist are just
some of the hats worn by Hank Wangford - but the one best
suited is a dusty, trusty cowboy hat.
Having been turned onto country music in the early seventies
by former patient and jamming buddy, Gram Parsons; the man
described as the guilty conscience of British country music
has gone on to influence a host of British artists, including
Billy Bragg, The The and Alabama 3.
'If you want originality, something that still has the bite
and twang that drained out of so much country, the sharp cutting
wit and the rawness of hard country, then there is only one
man to see. His name is Hank Wangford.'

THE
HELLS
THE
IDEOTS
Formed in Easter 2001, The Ideots are a five-piece band from
Royal Tunbridge Wells. Their live shows are full of raw energy
and bitterness, played knowing that while punk may be dead,
The Ideots still live. This band have a certain arrogant charm
about them. They're young, cheeky-faced and overflowing with
testosterone : they're mad at the world and want you to know
it.
Recently signed to Hubb Records, recording for the first release
is to commence over the summer and will hopefully be available
soon after. In the meantime enjoy the shows.
IT's
JO and DANNY
Having swapped the dark streets
of London for the dark mountains of Wales three years ago,
It's Jo and Danny return to their old manor for a special
date before their British tour kicks off in July.
Their third album, 'but we have the music' has just been released
to critical acclaim. The Times made it their Album
of the Week and Uncut, Mojo and the N.M.E.
have all given it great reviews.
The live band features members of The Super Furries and Broadcast.
JOAN
COFFY
JOHN
ETHERIDGE
John Etheridge has been at the top of the jazz and contemporary
guitar world for 25 years, having played with such famous
names as Soft Machine, Stephane Grappelli, Dizzy Gillespie
and John Williams. His career has covered a huge range of
musical territory combining both powerful improvising, technique,
a feel for idiom and an individual concept which makes his
output eclectic but highly personal.
JOHN
PAUL HOLT 3rd

JOHNNY
4
J4 have had a great start to 2003, kicking off with
a very successfull tour in Spain supporting Simian, followed
by a support slot for N*E*R*D at Londons Astoria. Recently
the band have just come out of the studio recording their
first single which is due for release at the end of the summer.
A collective bundle of energy, angst, mischief and static
interference that will be sure to make a big impression in
the near future Running Jump Records.
KATUS
Twisted tales of love, fate, passion and protest, culminating
in a range of a capella songs that staple you to your seat.
She has been playing in Bristol, London and Prague every month,
accompanied by flautist/saxophonist Tony Wrafter (who played
on Trickys and Massive Attacks best albums). A
rare appearance. Dont miss it. Better than Red Stripe.
Sister Love on a long, lazy, Shillelagh afternoon.
LARGEMAN
LIANE
CARROLL
A singer with a heart-stopping voice, raunchy piano style
and an eclectic repertoire of jazz, soul and blues.
LINCOLN
Lincoln come from London and dedicate themselves in music
and lyrics to the dark side of life. An intensive, dark atmosphere,
tragic melodies, the singing of Alex Gordon and Tracy van
Daal and the partly minimalistic, partly complex instrumenting
untouched in a row with the likes of PALACE, MAZZY STAR, LOW
or SONGS:OHIA.
LITTLE
BARRIE
Classic three-piece band with a contemporary twist on funk,
soul and rock n' roll.
'Give Little barrie a chance and what you get in return is
Rock n ; Roll energy, performances as intense and vital as
you've wished for'. Mojo
'Little Barrie could do for the funk what the White Stripes
have been doing for the blues lately'. NME
LUCKY
JIM
There
are echoes of Neil Young, Lee Hazlewood, Nick Cave, Van Morrison,
Serge Gainsbourg, Arthur Lee, Leonard Cohen, Brian Wilson,
Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, Ewan MacColl, Phil Spector and many
others - but it is all done in such individual and modern
style that the songs are far more than the sum of their influences.
You may hear some of the twinkle of 21st century 'chill out'
music, but this is not generic comedown fodder - the emotional
pallette of the lyrics and arrangements is too rich for that.
LUMIERE
BROTHERS
The Lumiere Brothers live in a world
of their own. a deserted disneyland landscape, a 24 hour junk
shop full of abandoned instruments and forgotten songs. The
bastard child of Tom Waits and The Monkees, brothers Timothy
and Shireen make a startlingly singular sound. Itıs
only rock and roll, just lonelier, maybe more chaotic.
LUXURY
CONDO
The lights go down , the movie starts, a downtown bar illuminated
only by the neon from a giant cactus, smoke obscuring all
but a fleeting glimpse of the band seated, intense, hunched
over their instruments breathing a lifetime of bum deals,
regrets, lost loves and low life observations into a powerful
soup of noir blues.
You can't take your eyes and ears off them lest you recognise
your own demons. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you.... Luxury

MARY
LEE'S CORVETTE
In 2002 Mary Lee's Covette scored a surprise hit with 'Blood
on the Tracks', a fearless song-for-song reinterpretation
of Bob Dylan's 1975 classic of the same name. Although some
may have regarded this as an act of criminal sacrilege, Dylan
himself embraced the re-working and featured one of the tracks
on his website.
More recently front-woman, Mary Lee Kortes, has contributed
to the book, 'Storyteller' - a collection of short stories
written by among others Ray Davies, Joan Jett and Lou Reed
- and has spent the last few months supporting Joe Jackson
throughout the US.

PLAKKA
Sometimes band, sometimes installation...Plakka return from
playing parties and exhibitions in and around Hackney to play
the fringe with their new lineup. The music retains its space-age
B-Movie electronics, but refuels with a sonic death-rock dub
space invasion. Comprising synths, drum machines, electric
guitars, live drums and vocals, the music combines influences
from Berlin, Sheffield and Chicago.
Powered by Keith Levene as producer, Plakka will be releasing
their debut EP later this year. Hear the EP live, plus firm
festival favourites such as Berlin Lady Shave with its prophetic
party anthem lyrics '...I remember Berlin, I remember Burnley'.
PUSCHA
Puscha, a rock band from Brighton (think aggressive Muse meets
the Vines), are currently packing out local venues and now
spreading their wings to conquer the rest of the country.
They have recently signed a recording contract with independent
label Full On Entertainment and will be releasing their debut
single Maybe We Want To in July this year to tie
in with local BBC event Brighton Rocks. Their live performance
is brilliant to watch, never failing to blow away an audience.

Guy Evans - percussion, electronics
Julia Farrington - bass, flute
Mark Thomas - bass, French horn
A welcome return to this intriguing ensemble after a Festival

out on daring sorties into unusual musical terrain, that can
be hazardous. Deftly piloted by Van de Graaf Generator drummer
Evans, the ride is guaranteed groove-rich and lyrical.

Legendary guitar god and central creative hub of th' seminal

content with these crimes alone, and too apathetic to write
his own songs, he steals them from the incredibly talented
but little known Pious Johnson and quite thoroughly murders
the lot. In fact the only thing to recommend seeing him is
to marvel at the inescapable sexual allure.
