DOGHEADS

Butch and Spike (those intrepid electronic adventurers) return to the fringe with their unique brand of canine-friendly dogtronica. Straight off the back of their recent 'dogheads party' at Ryans bar and two show stopping performances at the St Pancras Station building and Mutiny at the bargehouse, dogheads are once again coming home to their original kennels after picking up a few new tricks at the pound.

GARLIC

Garlic were formed in London in November 1998. Their second album Jam Sabbatical‚ is due for release on Bellaunion Records in Sept 2003. It’s the follow up to debut album The Murky World of Seats which was released to great acclaim in 2001. With Peel Session, support to New Order and live performances at CMJ and SWSX under their belts, things are looking rosy for the UK outfit.

HANK WANGFORD AND THE LOST COWBOYS

Rock 'n' roll doctor, author and travel journalist are just some of the hats worn by Hank Wangford - but the one best suited is a dusty, trusty cowboy hat.

Having been turned onto country music in the early seventies by former patient and jamming buddy, Gram Parsons; the man described as the guilty conscience of British country music has gone on to influence a host of British artists, including Billy Bragg, The The and Alabama 3.

Formed in Easter 2001, The Ideots are a five-piece band from Royal Tunbridge Wells. Their live shows are full of raw energy and bitterness, played knowing that while punk may be dead, The Ideots still live. This band have a certain arrogant charm about them. They're young, cheeky-faced and overflowing with testosterone : they're mad at the world and want you to know it.

Recently signed to Hubb Records, recording for the first release is to commence over the summer and will hopefully be available soon after. In the meantime enjoy the shows.

IT's JO and DANNY

Having swapped the dark streets of London for the dark mountains of Wales three years ago, It's Jo and Danny return to their old manor for a special date before their British tour kicks off in July.

Their third album, 'but we have the music' has just been released to critical acclaim. The Times made it their Album of the Week and Uncut, Mojo and the N.M.E. have all given it great reviews.

The live band features members of The Super Furries and Broadcast.

John Etheridge has been at the top of the jazz and contemporary guitar world for 25 years, having played with such famous names as Soft Machine, Stephane Grappelli, Dizzy Gillespie and John Williams. His career has covered a huge range of musical territory combining both powerful improvising, technique, a feel for idiom and an individual concept which makes his output eclectic but highly personal.

There are echoes of Neil Young, Lee Hazlewood, Nick Cave, Van Morrison, Serge Gainsbourg, Arthur Lee, Leonard Cohen, Brian Wilson, Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, Ewan MacColl, Phil Spector and many others - but it is all done in such individual and modern style that the songs are far more than the sum of their influences.

You may hear some of the twinkle of 21st century 'chill out' music, but this is not generic comedown fodder - the emotional pallette of the lyrics and arrangements is too rich for that.

LUMIERE BROTHERS

The Lumiere Brothers live in a world of their own. a deserted disneyland landscape, a 24 hour junk shop full of abandoned instruments and forgotten songs. The bastard child of Tom Waits and The Monkees, brothers Timothy and Shireen make a startlingly singular sound.  Itıs only rock and roll, just lonelier, maybe more chaotic.

The lights go down , the movie starts, a downtown bar illuminated only by the neon from a giant cactus, smoke obscuring all but a fleeting glimpse of the band seated, intense, hunched over their instruments breathing a lifetime of bum deals, regrets, lost loves and low life observations into a powerful soup of noir blues.

MARY LEE'S CORVETTE

In 2002 Mary Lee's Covette scored a surprise hit with 'Blood on the Tracks', a fearless song-for-song reinterpretation of Bob Dylan's 1975 classic of the same name. Although some may have regarded this as an act of criminal sacrilege, Dylan himself embraced the re-working and featured one of the tracks on his website.

More recently front-woman, Mary Lee Kortes, has contributed to the book, 'Storyteller' - a collection of short stories written by among others Ray Davies, Joan Jett and Lou Reed - and has spent the last few months supporting Joe Jackson throughout the US.

THE NAKED EYE

As part of the Stoke Newington Festival weekend THE NAKED EYE, will be stripping bare the film talent of Stoke Newington and putting it on display for all to come and see. Three separate venues will screen and bring together short films from the area and short films from the nation. You can vote for your favorite film from the three events over the three days, leading up to a final extravaganza on the Sunday where prizes will be awarded for the 4 best shorts you voted for.

Sometimes band, sometimes installation...Plakka return from playing parties and exhibitions in and around Hackney to play the fringe with their new lineup. The music retains its space-age B-Movie electronics, but refuels with a sonic death-rock dub space invasion. Comprising synths, drum machines, electric guitars, live drums and vocals, the music combines influences from Berlin, Sheffield and Chicago.

Powered by Keith Levene as producer, Plakka will be releasing their debut EP later this year. Hear the EP live, plus firm festival favourites such as Berlin Lady Shave with its prophetic party anthem lyrics '...I remember Berlin, I remember Burnley'.

PUSCHA

Puscha, a rock band from Brighton (think aggressive Muse meets the Vines), are currently packing out local venues and now spreading their wings to conquer the rest of the country. They have recently signed a recording contract with independent label Full On Entertainment and will be releasing their debut single ‘Maybe We Want To’ in July this year to tie in with local BBC event Brighton Rocks. Their live performance is brilliant to watch, never failing to blow away an audience.

The SBG are a group of friends who came together through boredom of the suburbs. There is a unique blend of rap and dub and they are one of the latest signings to the Hub label. Not content with these crimes alone, and too apathetic to write his own songs, he steals them from the incredibly talented but little known Pious Johnson and quite thoroughly murders the lot. In fact the only thing to recommend seeing him is to marvel at the inescapable sexual allure.
